Black Shuck Candle
On August 4th 1577, the legend of Black Shuck was born from a thunder clap. A manifestation of the devil, Black Shuck appeared in the form of a large shaggy dog with frightening red eyes, seemingly summoned by an immense hellish storm.
Bursting through the doors of St Mary’s church in Bungay, Shuck brought death and destruction to the congregation. An old verse recalls:
"All down the church in midst of fire, the hellish monster flew, and, passing onward to the quire, he many people slew"
Shuck progressed to Holy Trinity Church at Blythburgh where his reign of terror continued. The church door still bears the scorched claw marks to this day, often referred to as ‘the devil’s fingerprints.’
Sightings of Black Shuck throughout East Anglia have continued ever since. To witness Shuck is said to be an omen of death. If not the death of the spectator, then the death of a family member is sure to follow within a year.
The name Shuck originates from ‘succa,’ an old English word meaning ‘devil,’ or ‘fiend.’
The Black Shuck candle may be smaller than a real life spectral hellhound, but he is no less fearsome! Made from black beeswax with a deep purple tint, little Black Shuck’s large red eyes and shaggy sculpted fur are intimidating enough to guard your bookshelf or mantle.
