By the banks of Forfar loch stands an unusual memorial stone. Poignant in its stark simplicity, it is carved with the words, “The Forfar Witches. Just People.” The message strikes a solemn chord. They were in fact “just,” given that they were wrongly accused of a crime, and they were also “just like us.” Just people, like you or me.
On the face of the stone there are 22 dots carved in a circle. The dots represent twenty one women and one man who were executed for the “abominable cryme of witchcraft,” almost four centuries ago. Yet this memorial stone was only erected in 2010. Although these women experienced particularly brutal torture, imprisonment and execution, perhaps the biggest crime inflicted upon them is that they were forgotten.
Inspired by this beautiful memorial I have made a candle. The flame can be lit for remembrance and peace.
The Forfar Witches Memorial candle weighs in at 173g and is made from a beeswax & coconut wax blend. Standing at 15cm tall including the wick, which is made from braided cotton.
